Forget what you think you know about hearing aids

Hearing loss affects one in five Canadians, however, only 12% of them actually wear hearing aids according to this study by Stats Canada. So why don’t more people actually take action on their hearing loss? Here are some common hearing aid myths that could be holding you back from addressing something that so dearly impacts your life.

Myth: My hearing will improve on its own.

Fact: Hearing loss can develop slowly over time, or suddenly and without warning. In some cases, such as a middle ear infection or damaged eardrum, your ear can heal and hearing loss may improve with treatment. In others treatment with medication isn’t possible, such as with age-related hearing loss like presbyacusis. Either way, your hearing loss won’t get better on its own. Take proactive control of your hearing health by working with your physician and hearing care specialist early.

Myth: Hearing aids are one size fits all, they wouldn’t suit me.

Fact: Hearing aids today come in all shapes and sizes. They range from powerful, Bluetooth-enabled over-the-ear models to fully-automatic, in-the-canal devices. Most feature individual programming specific to your unique hearing loss and lifestyle and are fitted to your ear.

Myth: Taking care of my hearing is complex and not worth the effort yet.

Fact: Your hearing connects you to the things you love most and at Connect Hearing we want it to be as easy as possible for you to take care of. You do not need a doctor's note or referral to get your hearing checked at Connect Hearing and we will work with your physician or ENT to keep them updated on your hearing health. Hearing tests are free, fast, and painless. Your hearing care professional will spend the time to explain your results and make sure you have what you need to make an informed decision.

Myth: The hearing professionals are not there for me.

Fact: Connect Hearing Care Professionals are focussed on your hearing health. They are there to make sure you get the hearing help that you need both now and in the future.  If you learn you would benefit from hearing aids, they will work with you to find the right hearing technology to suit your hearing loss, the activities you enjoy and your budget.

The fact is hearing loss won’t wait for you to do something about it. Connect Hearing makes it simple to get your hearing checked and find the information you need to approach your hearing loss with confidence.
