While most of our list of new year's resolutions to protect your hearing has involved physical precautions, Number 2 has to do with psychology.
#2 Resolution for Healthy Hearing: Talk Openly About Hearing Loss
Studies have shown that people who speak openly about hearing loss are more likely to take preventive measures. Speaking about hearing loss — even if your hearing is sound — reduces the stigma of the condition, researchers have found. Those who discuss it are more likely to take the steps necessary to curtail its effects when the time comes.
"The more comfortable we as a society become in discussing hearing loss, the more comfortable we will be in seeking help for it," says MJ DeSousa, our Director of Professional Practice. "Getting your hearing checked should be as common an occurrence for human health as visiting an optometrist for an eye test or a family physician for an annual physical."
